Municipalities, port authorities, and industrial developers face the persistent threat of atmospheric salinity, high humidity, fluctuating tides, and aggressive wind loads. In these areas, standard steel structures fail rapidly. The deployment of specialized steel light poles for coastal and marine environments is not merely a preference; it is a critical safety and financial imperative.

Infrastructure located within 10 kilometers of a coastline is subjected to constant salt spray, which acts as a catalyst for electrochemical oxidation (rusting). Without robust protective engineering, structural decay can lead to catastrophic pole failures within a fraction of their intended design life. Modern manufacturing techniques, combining advanced steel alloys, hot-dip galvanization, and multi-layered duplex coatings, ensure that coastal lighting remains operational, safe, and cost-effective over decades of continuous exposure.

Key Corrosion Challenges in Marine Environments

Understanding the degradation mechanisms in marine atmospheres is key to designing resilient lighting infrastructure. The primary factors include:

  • Chloride-Induced Corrosion: Airborne salt particles deposit on the steel surface, forming an electrolyte layer that accelerates the movement of electrons, leading to rapid pitting and structural thinning.
  • High Relative Humidity: Coastal zones frequently exceed 70% relative humidity, keeping the steel surface damp and continuously facilitating chemical corrosion processes.
  • Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation: Intense coastal sun exposure degrades organic coatings (paints and polymers), causing chalking and micro-cracking that allow moisture and chlorides to reach the base metal.
  • Galvanic Action: The presence of dissimilar metals (e.g., steel poles in contact with stainless steel fasteners or aluminum fixtures) in a saline environment creates a galvanic cell, rapidly corroding the anode.

Engineering Solutions: Hot-Dip Galvanization and Duplex Systems

To combat these aggressive forces, Lecuso utilizes state-of-the-art protection technologies. The foundation of our marine-grade steel light poles is Hot-Dip Galvanization (HDG). By submerging the fabricated steel pole into a bath of molten zinc at approximately 450°C (840°F), a series of zinc-iron alloy layers are metallurgically bonded to the steel surface. This provides both a physical barrier and sacrificial cathodic protection.

For extreme C5-M marine environments, we recommend a Duplex Coating System. This process involves applying a specialized powder coating or liquid paint over the galvanized steel. The combination of these two protective barriers provides a synergistic effect, extending the service life of the pole by 1.5 to 2.5 times the sum of the individual lifetimes of the galvanizing and paint systems. The outer coating protects the zinc layer from atmospheric degradation, while the zinc layer prevents under-film corrosion if the paint is scratched or damaged.

Wind Load Engineering & Structural Integrity

Coastal areas are frequently prone to tropical storms, typhoons, and high-velocity sea breezes. A marine-grade light pole must be structurally engineered to withstand these dynamic wind pressures. Lecuso engineers utilize advanced wind-load calculation models conforming to international standards (such as AASHTO and EN 40). We customize the pole's wall thickness, taper ratio, and base plate dimensions based on the local wind speed zone, ensuring that high mast installations (up to 40 meters) remain stable and secure even during severe weather events.
